The Sylvan Heights Avian Breeding Center, founded in 1981, is home to the largest collection of rare and exotic waterfowl in the world.  To educate the public about these birds and waterfowl and the importance of conserving them, the Sylvan Heights Bird Park in Scotland Neck opened in 2006. The 18-acre park houses over 2,000 waterfowl and exotic birds from South America, North America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. Visitors at the park walk through large, open aviaries and even have the opportunity to feed and interact with some of the birds.
