Roby Huffman & the Bluegrass Cut-ups

Location: R.A. Fountain

from the March 5, 2009 FAD

Huffman, of Smithfield, has performed throughout the U.S. and Europe with several versions of the Cut-ups, since he first broke onto the bluegrass scene in the 1960s. His current band includes son Jeff Huffman on lead guitar; Daniel Casey on banjo; Mike Rose on mandolin; and Ray Bridgers on bass.

“Roby’s the godfather of east Carolina bluegrass,” said Fountain General proprietor Alex Albright. “He’s got that high, lonesome tenor that for a lot of people really defines traditional bluegrass. And he’s got a band of all-star pickers to give it the speed and precision that makes for an outstanding entertainment.”

Huffman’s several LPs are prized by collectors. His three CDs–One More Time, Old Blue, and Almost Level–are available through RAF’s e.store.
