Mike Compton & Joe Newberry in downtown Fountain is one of those concerts a venue like RAF ought not to get to host. But Joe lives in Raleigh, and sometimes he’s got a tour upcoming or a break in one that gives him and whoever he’s performing with–once it was April Vertch–time to stop by again.
He’s brought along Mike, who won a Grammy for picking mandolin on the “O Brother, Where Art Thou” soundtrack, a couple of times before.
Mike had his first cheese biscuit the morning after one of their shows. We walked down to Mickey’s, where, in line, someone said to him, “You look a lot like Mike Compton.” Mike admitted that he was, and the fan excused himself to go to his truck for a CD to get autographed, muttering that he couldn’t believe Mike Compton had been in Fountain the night before.
Mickey’s has been closed for years now, but these fellows can still put on a show you’ll not want to miss.
Sometimes it’s a Newberry reunion when Joe’s in town and this tine we’re getting him to give us an L to R on all these folks. Photo by Tom Whelan.
David Cecelski visited two of our area’s best restaurants, Mickey’s in Fountain and Cobb’s in Farmville, both now closed. His excellent blog from which this excerpt below has been lifted is archived by the North Carolina Folklife Institute.
