Mac McRoy & Southpoint

Location: R.A. Fountain

Traditional bluegrass presented by some of East Carolina’s best pickers, with great harmonies, too.

Big Mac’s back with an outstanding new band of East Carolina bluegrass pickers & singers.

Lead singer and guitarist Mac McRoy is joined in the band by Mary Carver McRoy on high lonesome harmonies and mandolin; Mitch Mitchell on banjo and guitar; Steven Clark on upright bass and baritone vocals–and usually a couple of guest performers.

Big Mac was a regular performer at RAF back when we were getting started, fronting one of the most popular bluegrass bands in East Carolina; they recorded one CD live here, now out of print. From New Bern, he writes original songs for the band and really knows how to entertain a crowd.  They play, he says, “for their love of bluegrass gospel music, our church family–and most of all our Lord and Savior.” His wife, Mary Carver McRoy, is originally from Washington.

Steven Clark has been playing bass, standup & electric, for over 35 years. From Washington, he played rock, contemporary and gospel before seeing the bluegrass light and hooking up with Big Mac

Mitch Mitchell, 28, was born and raised on a farm in Dover. Influenced by Earl Scruggs and JD Crow, he’s one of the finest traditional 5-string pickers around.

Bluegrass morning! Big Mac & most of his crew put on an 8:30 a.m. show for a few hundred bicyclers in October 2023. Then we forgot to get a photo of them at their November evening show.
