Cape Lookout National Seashore: Paradigm for a Coastal System Ethic is published by a small press that’s part of an independent bookstore, so we doubly recognize the difficulties of running an independent bookstore these days. That’s why we’re offering indy bookstores this holiday offer that we hoe is too good to pass up.

Cape Lookout National Seashore: Paradigm for a Coastal System Ethic is the first in a trilogy of books on North Carolina’s southern Outer Banks by Stan Riggs, our preeminent authority on North Carolina’s complex coastal systems.
Published by R.A. Fountain for the non-profit NC Land of Water, it also launches a Riggs-authored 10-book series to be published in three volumes.
His’ latest book establishes the geologic and climatic framework needed for understanding and learning to live with our changing coast. He demonstrates that Cape Lookout is a model for how our barrier islands should be treated–compared especially to its northern neighbor, Cape Hatteras–while also engaging his readers with a fascinating social and cultural history of an island that’s now become America’s grandest national seashore.
Coming soon are Riggs’ definitive books on Portsmouth and Core Banks (book 2) and then Cape Lookout and Shackleford Banks (book 3). Together, these books unlock the secrets of all barrier islands, for both the public and policymakers.
Riggs is no longer writing primarily for a scientific community. Here he’s crafting books that are fun to read and beautifully designed, with dozens of maps, figures, and illustrations that enliven and annotate his lucid prose.
This is a book–and it will be a series–for a general reader’s enjoyment and education–and also for our elected leaders, with the hope that they’ll pull their collective heads out of our beach sand in time to make a coherent and sensible plan for saving as much of our coast as might be done at this late hour in human time.

Stanley R. Riggs, PhD is a distinguished coastal and marine geologist whose career spans over six decades. As Professor emeritus at East Carolina University, he played a pivotal role in establishing the university’s geology and marine science programs. Dr. Riggs has dedicated his life to studying the dynamic coastal systems of North Carolina, focusing on the intricate interplay between natural processes and human activities. His extensive research has not only advanced scientific understanding but also informed public policy and coastal management strategies. A recipient of numerous accolades, including the O. Max Gardner Award and the North Carolina Award for Science, Dr. Riggs is renowned for his unique ability to communicate complex geological concepts to diverse audiences. Through his work, he advocates for sustainable development and the preservation of North Carolina’s barrier islands, emphasizing the importance of living in harmony with the ever-changing coastal environment.
