• an interview with A.R. Ammons, a new poem, excerpts from Tape for the Turn of the Year, an essay on the Ammons papers at UNC-CH, and a few family photographs, including one that mistakenly misidentifies an unknown woman as Archie’s sister Vida standing with him.

• a special section on NC slave narratives includes the complete narrative text of George Moses Horton’s, which was published in 1829, and of Violet Lester’s, which is published here for the first time. 

• a special section on John Lawson

• also photographs by Lawrence Earley and Roger Manley and essays by Fred Chappell on Randall Jarrell, Janet Lembke on grackles (the state bird, NCLR declared, of East Carolina), and Linda Flowers.
