Sandy, Les

1928 - 2022

Les fiddles with Lightnin’ Wells and Shelby & Linda Stephenson

Les Sandy toured and recorded with Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys during the 1950s, playing guitar and bass and performing comedy as Uncle Puny. He also played bass for Jim and Jesse McReynolds  and the Virginia Boys. He performed at RAF often with his good friend Shelby Stephenson; with his own band, Les Sandy’s Other Band, with whom he made his only solo recording; and with Clearview.

Watch Les performing “Bluegrass Stomp” with Les Sandy’s Other Band at RAF from 2006.

Les was one of dozens of bluegrassers who were memorialized at the 2022 IBMA awards program in Raleigh. Read Richard Thompson’ sexcellent  obituary as published in Bluegrass Today on August 3, 2022; it includes a solid discography and links to several video and recording performances that feature Les.
