Ted Jones & the Tar Heel Boys

Location: R.A. Fountain

Little did we know that this would turn out to be Ted’s last performance at RAF.

Ted’s been picking old style traditional bluegrass since 2004, and he always brought a band of excellent musicians to town for his shows. Sadly, we learned in August ’19 that he was giving up the band.

The Tar Heel Boys for this show included Randy Canady on rhythm guitar and tenor vocals; Joey Canady on banjo; and Preacher Paul Winstead on the upright bass. Ted, of course, was cross-picking his classic mandolin in the style popularized by his hero Jesse McReynolds; he also played some lead guitar and sang lead vocals.

Ted and his bands released seven CDs, including a tribute to East Carolina bluegrass legend Roby Huffman, and their most recent, Keeping the Tradition, which was nominated for bluegrass CD of the year in 2018 by the Old Time Country Music Association.
