[Fountain, NC] Staber and Chasnoff, an acoustic duo from upstate New York, perform original and traditional bluegrass and old-time music at Fountain General Store on Saturday night.

Dick Staber played mandolin for Del McCoury and the Dixie Pals, 1969-75; with Don Stover, 1977-78; and with Bob Paisley and Southern Grass, 1978-80. In addition to the recordings he made with those bands, he released three critically acclaimed solo LPs in the 1980s.

Judith Chasnoff was classically trained as a vocalist but by high school had become intrigued by the 1960s folk music scene in New York. She quit music for several years of Buddhist studies but re-kindled that early interest about the time she met Staber at a jam session in 1993. They were married soon after.

“Dick’s got the sweetest tone on mandolin we’ve heard in Fountain,” said Alex Albright, the general store’s proprietor. “Their harmonies are terrific, too, like the old brother duets of the 1930s and ’40s.”

Together, they have released three CDs.

Staber and Chasnoff play Fountain annually in January as they move to Florida for the winter months.
