Elm City native Shannon Baker fronts a band that mixes all the right ingredients for great bluegrass. That she and Sometime Soon are neighbors makes a might like this one all the more special for us.
Expect powerful vocals–nuanced when needed–and an all-star band of excellent pickers delivering an outstanding show of traditional bluegrass, bluegrass gospel, and original music.
They kicked off 2025 in style, performing at SPGMA ’25 in Nashville.
Baker, a Barton College graduate, plays mandolin and has been fronting a band since she was in high school. Most of the Sometime Soon pickers are familiar to our audiences: John Dudley, banjo and guitar; Joe Pessolano, mandolin , Dobro, and guitar; Ronnie Parrish, bass; and Chris Hill, fiddle. They’ve all played with many of our region’s best bluegrass ensembles.
We’re also fortunate that singer as talented as Shannon is continuing the bluegrass traditions established in East Carolina by the Grass Cats, Roby Huffman & the Bluegrass Cut-ups, Al Batten & Bluegrass Reunion, Marshall Stephenson & the Bluegrass Train, and, more recently, Samantha Casey & the Bluegrass Jam. They were all Johnston County acts that used to stop by RAF two or three times a year, but for now, it looks like our bluegrass epicenter is moving up the highway, to Wilson County, with Shannon Baker & Sometime Soon leading the way.
