[Fountain, NC] Russ Varnell and Too Country perform traditional and honky-tonk country music at Fountain General Store this coming Friday night.

Varnell, of Black Creek, fronts one of the most popular country music bands in the region. He has in recent months performed several times in Nashville, Tennessee, where he was also a guest on the RFD-TV shows “Larry’s Country Diner” and “The Shotgun Red Show.”

Varnell and Too Country have been performing as a band for 12 years. They were featured at the 2015 Dukes Fest, an annual Dukes of Hazzard cast reunion, where they shared the stage with T. Graham Brown, Stella Parton, and Ralph Stanley.

Varnell’s own television show, “The Russ Varnell Real Country Music Show,” is in its sixth year on WHIG-TV in Rocky Mount. He and his band have released three CDs of classic country hits.

“In addition to being a terrific vocalist and the best-dressed country music singer in East Carolna, Russ always brings an excellent band with him,” said Alex Albright, Fountain General Store proprietor. Ricky Hagan plays steel guitar, Roger Gilmore is on drums, Dave Evans on guitar, and Evan Rose on bass.

The band features songs popularized by such country music legends as George Jones, Merle Haggard, Hank Williams, Sr., Ernest Tubb, Del Reeves, and the late Buck Owens, who hosted Varnell several times at his legendary Crystal Palace in Bakersfield, California.
