Rupert Wates

Location: R.A. Fountain

Rupert Wates, originally from London, England, was living and performing in Paris for several years before moving to the U.S. in 2006, where he’s continued to build his reputation as an original and important voice in contemporary fok music. Now based in New York City and Colorado, he performs about 120 shows a year. He’s  earned over 50 songwriting / performing awards. His 12th CD, For the People, was named #7 in a best of 2022 listing by the UK magazine BluesBlues.

His music is an eclectic mix of acoustic, melodic art-folk, with flavors of jazz, vaudeville and cabaret.

We originally had Rupert booked last May, but after he was selected as an official showcase artist at the Northeast Folk Alliance conference in Atlanta, we re-booked for this evening.

Of all the laudatory praise Wates has received, his most impressive credit may be that two CDs have been made as tributes to his songwriting artistry: Crazy Puzzle (2015) by Nashville-based Roxie Rogers, and Wide Open Heart (July 2017) by Los Angeles vocalist Susan Kohler
