Fronted by Daniel & Carolyn Routh, Nu-Blu is one of our favorites. The Rouths host the nationally syndicated TV show Bluegrass Ridge, now in its fifth season. With Nu-Blu, they bring their “warm, layered Appalachian sound” to town with Bear Grass’s own, Justin Harrison, on mandolin, fiddle & percussion, and young Justin Hefflefinger, originally from Pennsylvania, on banjo and guitar.

Donna Davis caught up with Justin’s dad, Frankie Harrison, for this excellent profile that’s also a history lesson in local bluegrass. As it turns out, Justin’s a 4th generation mando-picker. “Man to Mandolin” originally appeared in the Daily Reflector, November 22, 2025.
