Marty Silverthorne Day

Location: R.A. Fountain

from our promo for this special event

Join two NC Poets Laureate — Jaki Shelton Greene and Shelby Stephenson — and a host of Marty’s friends, who’ll be reading their favorite Silverthorne poem or two. Let us know if you’ve got one you’d like to share, or just come out for the fun of honoring one of East Carolina’s most authentic poetic voices.

Marty, from Williamston, is the author of six books of poetry, including Naming the Scars, which was the Longleaf Press 2017 chapbook contest winner. He has also received the 1985 Bunn-McClelland Chapbook Award and the 1993 Sam Ragan Award for Extraordinary Contributions to the Fine Arts of North Carolina. He was the NC Poetry Society’s Poet Laureate in 2015 and a finalist in 2018 for the inaugural Pamlico-Tar River Poet Laureate.

He’s also recently been named the 2019 Unsung Poet and will receive that award, from Jacar Press, during a recognition program at ECU on January 16.

As part of the celebration, participating poets will be offering their books for sale at a 20% discount, and all books and merchandise in Fountain General Store will also be 20% off.

Marty’s got plenty of outstanding poems still unclaimed for reading, and we could use lots of good listeners, too.

Marty enjoys other folks reading their favorite poems of his. Photo by Tom Whelan.
