Joe Newberry’s solo show tonight offers a rare opportunity to witness his many talents undiluted: he’s a renowned guitarist, banjo picker, and fiddler and an award-winning song writer. His previous performances here, both with his long-time picking buddy Mike Compton and with the iconic bluegrass band Big Medicine, were among the best shows we’ve ever hosted, and this one has that same kind of promise.

We all knew from early on what a terrific musician he is, but his musical reputation was greatly enhanced by his many appearances on “Prairie Home Companion,” whose host, Garrison Keillor, said of him, “A musician like Joe embodies the true South. You can’t have too many of these people.”

His song “Singing As We Rise,” as recorded by the Gibson Brothers, was the 2012 IBMA Gospel Recorded Performance of the year, and he co-wrote “They Called It Music,” the 2013 IBMA Song of the Year, also for the Gibson Brothers.

More recently, he was featured on the TransAtlantic Sessions tour of the United Kingdom with Dobro master Jerry Douglas, and he’s also been performing with Carolina legends Mike Craver, Bill Hicks, and Jim Watson.

Joe has called RAF “one my favorite venues anywhere in this old world,” and his performance tonight promises to be one of those shows you’ll not want to have missed.
