Hoot and Holler Plays Bluegrass, Country, Old-time Music Saturday Night

[Fountain, NC] The Asheville-based Hoot and Holler plays original and traditional bluegrass, country, old-time and Americana music at Fountain General Store Saturday night.

Mark Kilanski plays guitar and banjo and Amy Alvery plays fiddle. Both are graduates of the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Their performances combine the polished techniques learned in their conservatory training with the grit, drive and soul of Bill Monroe and Oa Belle Reed.

Alvery won the South Carolina State Fiddler’s Championship last year, and Kilanski earned 4th place at the 2016 Mt. Airy flat-picking guitar competition.

After a couple of years of touring the U.S. in a van, they settled in Asheville because of its strong contemporary music scene and to live in the midst of the authentic mountain music influences that still pervade the surrounding mountainside communities.

Already this year they have been featured at the Portland Old-Time Gathering and the Bellingham Folk Fest.

One critic noted that their performances are “rooted in old-time music but with a contemporary feel that keeps the songs fresh and exciting.”

Another: “Hoot and Holler takes the best of two separate fantastic artists and melds them into something even greater.” They blend voices and instruments to produce “perfect harmony.”

Hoot and Holler has released an EP, “Nothing if Not Young,” and one full-length CD, Reasons to Run.
