The Chatham Rabbits return to Fountain General Store tomorrow night for a concert of original and traditional Americana, oldtime, and bluegrass music.

This husband-wife duo has built an impressive reputation in just two years of traveling and performing and are now playing music full-time.

“It’s remarkable how quickly they’ve become one of the hottest acts in the Southeast,” said Alex Albright, Fountain General Store proprietor.

Sarah Osborne McCombie plays banjo and Austin McCombie is on guitar, and they are both excellent musicians. “What really sets them apart are their vocals,” added Albright. “Both individually and especially in harmony they are really impressive.”

The Rabbits have recently been featured on PBS, NPR and several local radio and television shows and have earned rave reviews from the News & Observer, Indy Week, Yes! Weekly, and Mountain Express, among many others.

The Wilmington Star-News writes that “their music is as mesmerizing as it is earnest, with a hard-earned matter-of-factness, and sometimes even a darkness creeps in around the edges of the harmonies.”

The Rabbits’ music has sometimes been compared to that of Mandolin Orange, whose mandolin player, Andrew Marlin, has performed with them live and on their debut CD.

Alamance County native Sarah McCombie has had a long-time love of oldtime music, and she first played Fountain with the South Carolina Broadcasters. Austin McCombie, from Raleigh, admits to having spent a while “on the dark side,” playing guitar and keys in the “super hispster electronic band DASH.”

They met at a Mandolin Orange Concert, and his interest in her piqued his interest in oldtime music.
