Tony Whetstone, a Greenville resident, will perform a concert of original acoustic folk and blues music at R.A. Fountain, General Store and Internet Café, Saturday night, March 5.|
A native of Alaska who grew up in California, Oklahoma, and France, Whetstone nevertheless was always captivated by what he later came to know was "Piedmont style blues."
"I didn't even know what a Piedmont was at the time," he said, but the fingerpicking styles of Etta Baker and Blind Boy Fuller were what he most loved to hear.
His concerts consist almost exclusively of original songs, he said, "that are grounded in traditional guitar and banjo styles. I call it 'new blues with deep roots' -- old-time country and blues, fingerpicked, bottlenecked, and clawhammered on guitar and banjo."
Whetstone's concert is at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $3.
