The String Poppers, an oldtime string trio, return to R.A. Fountain
on Friday night, March 17. Dennis Modlin sings and plays mandolin, bass, and guitar. He is joined in the band by his wife, Karen, who plays banjo, guitar, and bass. The Modlins, who live in Bath, have been playing oldtime, bluegrass, and blues music for over twenty years. "But this is the music we really love," said Karen, who also danced for about a decade in Greenville's legendary troupe The Greengrass Cloggers. "We call it oldtime good time music," she added. "This is pre-bluegrass music, sort of like country music from before it became identified with Nashville and the Grand Ole Opry," said Alex Albright, proprietor of R.A. Fountain.
The Modlins are joined in the String Poppers by Jeff Winegar from
Charlotte on fiddle. They have recently released their first CD, Live at
Possum Hill, and we invite you to hear the String Poppers in these three numbers from that disk: |
