Melody Brown of Zebulon will present a folk concert at R.A. Fountain this Friday, May 20.
Brown, who lives in Zebulon, is a native of Southport, N.C. "I grew up with music all around me," she said. "We sang bluegrass and old hymns at reunions and festivals in eastern Kentucky, and at home we sang Mom's original songs."
Brown learned her first guitar chords from her sister at age 11 and she wrote her first song when she was 13 while watching news coverage of the murder of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics.
"I especially love story songs," she said, "songs that inspire spiritualism and patriotism, songs of drama and tragedy, as well as songs of everyday life."
In her concerts, Brown plays guitar and occasionally uses prerecorded orchestrated tracks as backing.
Melody Brown's concert begins at 7:30. Admission is $3.
R.A. Fountain, General Store and Internet Café, is located in historic downtown Fountain, at the intersection of NC 222 and US 258. For further information, phone (252) 749-3228.
