SOMEONE'S SISTER HEADLINES FOUNTAIN MUSIC LINE-UP

The Greenville-based duo Someone's Sister headlines the upcoming long weekend of music at Fountain General Store.

Comprised of singer-songwriters Georgia Winfree and Katherine Jones, Sister has been compared to k.d. lang, Patsy Cline, and the Indigo Girls. But "Curve Magazine" says, "These wailing chicks proved on their recent debut, "Hand Me Downs," that they're in a class of their own."

Edge, published in Boston, said, "They are a genuine, musically-talented, beautifully harmonizing duo who craft their songs with precision and passion."

Winfree chose R.A. Fountain as the venue to celebrate her birthday, and the folks in Fountain are expecting a big crowd.

"This is their last show around here before they head up to New York for several gigs," said Alex Albright, Fountain General Store proprietor.

Opening for Someone's Sister is Laura McLean, who lives in Wilmington. Encore Magazine said of her, "This is where Joni Mitchell meets Satriani."

Someone's Sister's Nov. 5 concert begins at 8 p.m. General admission is $5; reserved seats are $8.

On Friday night, Black Creek Bluegrass Gospel band from Benson will present a free bluegrass and bluegrass gospel concert. Formed in 2000, Black Creek specializes in the Southern gospel bluegrass sounds made popular by the Rochesters and the Issacs. Doyle Lawson, Alison Krauss, Del McCoury and Ricky Skaggs are also influences on this trio.

Black Creek includes Craig Allen, guitar, banjo, dobro, vocals; Scott Johnson, guitar, vocals; and Tracie Rhodes Johnson, acouustic bass and vocals. Danny Allen is sound engineer.

Named for the creek near their homes in Johnston County, Black Creek Bluegrass Gospel nearly packed the house in Fountain on their first visit in August.

Black Creek's Nov. 4 concert begins at 7:30.

The long music weekend in Fountain kicks off Wednesday night with a free open mic hosted this week by Williamston-based bluesman Eddie Lilley. Signups start at 7:00; music begins at 7:30.

On Thursday night, Bill Hicks returns for a solo concert of Americana roots, mountain, and folk music.

A native of Raleigh, Hicks was an original member of the Red Clay Ramblers. His fiddle style helped give that band its early distinctive sound.

Of his "ambulant bow" on the CD South of Nowhwere, recorded with his wife, Libby, Bluegrass Unlimited said, "His improvisation, which abounds here, is marked by a searing tone and melodic sense much like a bebop horn player."

Hicks won second place in old time fiddle at this year's Mt. Airy Fiddlers Conventiion.

Bill Hicks' Nov. 3 concert begins at 7:30; admission is $3.

The 5-day run of live music in Fountain concludes on Sunday afternoon with a free concert by Flat Mountain Dulcimers. Nancy Galambush of Snow Hill and Margit Roberson and Dave Roberson of Goldsboro named their trio whimsically. "We like to tell folks we live in the Flat Mountains," Galambush said, "because people usually associate this music with the Appalachians."

Most of the dulcimers played by the group were built by Galambush's husband, J.C. Bradshaw, of Calico Possum Dulcimers. He often joins the group by playing along on either the dulcimer or spoons, and their shows incorporate a history of mountain music, complete with displays and artifacts.

"We're recording this show for them," said Albright. "So your applause will be an integral part of their debut CD."

Flat Mountain Dulcimer's free concert begins at 3:30 on Nov. 6.

Doc Watson in Wilson: For FREE!
Doc Watson's Saturday concert in downtown wide-awake Wilson is the headline musical event at this year's first Whirligig Festival, which honors Lucama legend Vollis Simpson.

The festival officially runs Saturday & Sunday, but it kicks off on Thursday night with a reception for the internationally renowned Simpson, from 5:30-7:30, in the Wilson Arts Center.

A big part of the festival is the whirligig competition, and Mr. Simpson will announce the winner just prior to Doc Watson's 12:30 p.m. concert.

The festival also features a barbecue cookoff, with plates of 'cue cooked by the contestants served Saturday for lunch.

Doc Watson plays on the Yellow Stage, in front of the BB&T building on Nash Street. Also performing on Saturday are Super Grit Cowboy Band (10 a.m.), Samecumba (1 p.m.), the Monitors (1 p.m.), Chairmen of the Board (3:30) and others.

Sunday afternoon's music features several area gospel choirs and the Puerto Rican folkloric troupe of singers and dancers known as "Casitas."
