Fountain Express

February 7, 2006

published weekly by R.A. Fountain, General Store & Internet Café

Dedicated to the memory of Martha Patt, who died on Friday night, Feb. 3, at 9:10 p.m. in Pitt Memorial Hospital. Martha was one of our most loyal and supportive customers. Virtually every night we were open, she walked from her home to our shop and sat at the back right, with a couple of her dear friends, with whom she could sometimes be found dancing. If you never met Martha, you surely noticed her big smile and dimples. She was, quite simply, one of the sweetest people in the world, which is a sadder place because of her absence.

Haywire Returns to Fountain for Big Bluegrass Show Saturday Night

The return of Haywire with Alice Zincone and Rick Lafleur to Fountain on Saturday night highlights the upcoming 4-day weekend of music at Fountain General Store.

Zincone, daughter of Greenville bluegrass musician Buddy Zincone, and Lafleur formed Haywire a couple of years ago, and they have been traveling in support of their debut CD, Moma's Voice. Zincone, who sings and plays bass, titled the CD to honor her mother.

Lafleur, who plays banjo, is a native Canadian who moved to North Carolina to be closer to the roots of bluegrass music. For their Fountain show, Haywire will also consist of Greg Miller on guitar and Jeff Aebi on mandolin. Miller is formerly of the Grass Cats; Aebi performed in Fountain with Big Medicine, and he will return to Fountain with his own band, Untravelled Road, on February 25.

"Alice has a beautiful voice," said Alex Albright, Fountain General Store proprietor, "and Rick is an incredible banjo player. It's a high-energy show, very entertaining."

Haywire's Feb. 11 concert of original and traditional bluegrass music begins at 8:00. General admission is $5; reserved seats are $7.

The long weekend of music begins on Thursday night with Fountain General Store's twice-monthly bluegrass jam, hosted again by Greenville's Jack Wrzesinski. The jam, which begins at 7:30, is free and open to the public.

On Friday night, Bill and Libby Hicks return to Fountain for a night of old-time and original folk music. Hicks, an original member of the Red Clay Ramblers, writes many of the couple's songs. Their Feb. 10 concert begins at 7:30; general admission is $3.

"They're both wonderful storytellers," said Albright, "and fine musicians."

The following night, the Hicks will perform for a contra dance in Greenville, sponsored by the Folk Arts Society.

Bill Hicks, who placed second at last year's fiddling competition in Mt. Airy, has released two solo CDs, and he maintains an interesting website that includes schedules and his occasional blog, as well as information about his work as a stone mason.

Sunday afternoon marks the return of Farmville's the Marlboro Boys for their monthly free concert in Fountain. "We've been hosting this show for a year now," said Albright, "and we're still getting folks out who've not had a chance to hear how good they are. Last month, we were close to standing room only for their concert."

Named for their home church in Farmville, Marlboro Free Will Baptist, the Marlboro Boys have released two CDs, God's Only Son and First Time Around, both of which will be available at their Feb. 12 concert. Click here to hear them perform "God's Only Son."

Valentine's Shopping in Fountain
Mike Hamer's Love Dust and Carol-Ann Tucker's Love Me Love Me Not are excellent Valentine's gifts. Tucker's new CD was produced for Valentine's Day, and it includes 13 classic love songs such as "Can't Help Falling in Love," "The Very Thought of You," "Hello Young Lovers," and "My Funny Valentine." She performed a few of these tunes last week at our standing-room only show with Steve Creech and Jerry Jolley.

Another suggestion: Flat Mountain Dulcimer's new CD, Live at R.A. Fountain, which was recorded in our shop by Cliff Nelson.

We also have in stock a nice array of special Valentine's soaps created by Lou Ann Haddock of Falkland. Her new scents include Forever Diamonds, Chocolate Fantasy, Jungle Love, Peppermint Dream, Long-stem Roses, Toast to Cupid, and Gentleman's Choice. Haddock's Belle Mist soaps are made in her home using a variation of an old-fashioned soap-cooking method that's chemical-free.

Her regular line of soaps -- Green Tea, Strawberry, Honeysuckle Rose, Cranberry Relish, to name a few -- includes one that is also scent-free. All are available at Fountain General Store, for $2.99 per 3.5 oz. bar.

Haddock's soaps complement our seasonal selections created by Ayden's Shirley Clenny: candles, boxes, Valentine's cards, photographs, and assemblages.

We also continue to stock a good selection of regional and North Carolina-related books, always sold at a 10% discount. These include collections of poetry by several local writers: Pat Bizzaro, Peter Makuck, and James Applewhite, to name a few. Click here to browse our book selection.
