Andy Coats was recently named one of the top 12 young blues performers in southern California. A native North Carolinian, Coats began serious study of blues music while earning a PhD in philosophy at the University of California, Riverside, where he also taught courses ranging from Critical Thinking to Biomedical Ethics. After a brief career in academia, Coats returned to southern California and to performing the music he loves.

Coats currently teaches guitar to about 45 students in Dana Point, California.
